An energy storage system is a group of large, interconnected battery units that store and produce electricity on demand. The batteries are installed on concrete pads in rows across a property and connect to existing electric distribution lines. They typically look like arrays of freight containers and tall lockers. These are modules that contain and protect the high-tech battery cells and cables. The batteries charge from the utility grid and store excess electricity. Then, when there is higher demand and less electricity available, the batteries feed electricity back onto the grid.
Why should I lease my land to a storage developer?
There are several benefits to leasing land that to a storage developer. Most importantly, it’s a way to generate a steady income stream for up to 25 years–and you don’t need to do a thing over the contract term.
What factors make a site suitable for battery storage?
We typically look for sites with at least 7,500 square ft or a multiple thereof. Manufacturing, mixed-use industrial, commercial, special purpose, and commercial overlay zones all work. The site will preferably be on flat ground without a building on it, but we are open to leveling the ground and doing existing building demolition if necessary.

Are energy storage systems safe?

Yes. Last year New York State created an “interagency fire safety working group” to determine the optimal fire codes, operations, and safety measures for electrical grid batteries. These are the most stringent in the nation. Large grid tied storage systems differ significantly from e-bikes and other appliances that spark fires when equipped with substandard lithium-ion batteries and stored indoors.

There are no emissions or moving parts. The batteries are also “solid-state,” meaning none of the materials dissolve in water making it impossible to spill or leak, so they are environmentally friendly.

Will this affect my property value negatively?
Energy storage projects like ours have not been shown to negatively impact on property values. Typically, these projects enhance property value by providing a stable, long-term income stream. At the end of the term there will be millions of dollars of energy infrastructure built into the land. That isn’t just the batteries themselves, but the connection to the grid.
